Immaculate Conception - Mary's sinless nature - Scriptural Evidence
In the olden time, an Angel would not show reverence to a man because Angels are greater than men. Man is of a corruptible nature, always inclining to sin due to original sin inherited from Adam. Therefore it is fitting that man should reverence to a sinless creature, like an Angel.
Acts of reverence to Angels by men can seen in various places the bible. For example,
Joshua prostrated before an Angel(Joshua 5:14); Daniel also did the same in terror before Angel Gabriel(Dan. 8:17).
For an Angel to show reverence to a man was never heard of until the Angel Gabriel reverently greeted the Blessed Virgin Mary, "Hail." This did not only confirm her sinless nature, but also points to us, her dignity which surpasses that of an angel. For the word "Hail" is a greeting accorded to persons of royal personage. Kindly note that Angel Gabriel who reverently saluted the Blessed Virgin, was the same Angel who Daniel saw and with great fear fell upon his face, and this was the same Angel who made Zacharias dumb, for expressing doubt by asking for signs. Surely, she must be free from sin for her to hold such dignity.
Mary's exempt from sin (including the original sin) is expressed in the Angel's words "full of grace"; for sin cannot be taken away except by grace, hence, she couldn't bear a stain of sin since she is "full of grace." "Thou art all fair my love, there is no spot in you."(Song of Solomon 4:7).
Erroneously maintaining that she was of the sinful nature (due to the misunderstanding of Romans 3:23) will be derogatory to the sanctity of God, for how could our All-Holy God take flesh from a sinful creature, since "nothing clean can come out of the unclean"(Job 14:4). Hence the necessity of exemption from original sin, and herein lies the dogma of Immaculate Conception.
In Ex. 25: 11-21, the ark was made of the purest gold for God's word, therefore it was fitting that the Lord's Ark, the Blessed Virgin Mary, bearing the Word(Christ) be also pure from sin.
The birth of Christ was of supernatural nature, and wouldn't have occurred if Mary was of sinful nature, for a Perfect God( Matt. 5:48) takes flesh only from a perfect creature.
To Mary, the Angel Gabriel said, "The Holy Spirit will come upon thee, and the power of the Most High will overshadow thee."(Luke 1:35) This would not be possible if our Lady incurred the stain of sin, for in Exodus chapter 40 and - as earlier mentioned - chapter 25, the tabernacle had to be sanctified before God's glory came upon it; for it is written "the cloud covered the tent of meeting and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle."(Ex. 40:34). Therefore Mary must have been sanctified for the power of God to overshadow her. The sanctification we speak of is the exempt from original sin.
God exempted her from original sin, for she was to be the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ - "who shall save His people from their sins."(Matt. 1:21). Would it be impossible for Christ to save His mother from original sin, if He was to save people from sin? Of course it would not, for with God all things are possible .
In gratitude for this most singular privilege, she sang, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour."
Happy Feast of Immaculate Conception.
